Your antipode is the point on Earth's surface diametrically opposite you — draw a straight line through the centre of the planet from where you stand, and it marks where that line comes out. The word is Greek: anti (opposite) + podes (feet), from the ancient image of people on the far side of the globe walking sole-to-sole with you. Finding yours takes two operations: your latitude flips hemisphere (48.86°N becomes 48.86°S) and your longitude shifts by 180°. Wherever you are, your antipode is about 20,015 km away — half the Earth's circumference, the greatest distance between any two points on the planet.
Conditions there are your mirror: when it's summer where you stand it's winter there, your noon is roughly its midnight, and the Moon appears rotated upside down relative to how you see it.
Water covers about 71% of the globe, and the continents are arranged with land largely facing water: Europe stares at the empty South Pacific, North America at the southern Indian Ocean. By most estimates less than 15% of the world's land is antipodal to other land. The famous exceptions: Spain mirrors New Zealand, China and Southeast Asia mirror South America, and Hawaii mirrors Botswana. So an American digging "to China" would actually surface in empty sea southwest of Australia — while a child in Argentina digging the same hole really would reach China.
